What is Major and Minor Mineral?

Major Mineral

As per Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 any mineral other than minor mineral is called major mineral.

“notified minerals” means any mineral specified in the Schedule IV i.e. Bauxite, Iron ore, Limestone and Manganese ore are  notified minerals

Minor mineral

Minor mineral means building stones, gravels, ordinary clay, ordinary sand other than sand used for prescribed purposes and any other mineral which the central  government may, by notification in the official Gazette declare to be minor mineral. List of Minor mineral is given in Schedule –III of GMMCR-2017

What are the applicable Act and Rules for Major and Minor Mineral ?

The MMDR Act 1957 is applicable for both major and minor mineral

Under section -13 Central Government have a power to make rules in respect of major mineral.

Under section -15 State Government shall have a power to make rules in respect of Minor mineral.

What is the procedure for allocation of Mineral concession?

The Major mineral concession is allotted under MMDR Act, 1957 and rules made theirunder by way of Auction.

The minor mineral concession is allotted through auction in case of Government land and area above 4 Hectare in Privtae land, however, in  Private land below 4 Hectare area, it is granted by way of application according to GMMCR-2017 and subsequent amendments.
